Evan Lysacek underscored in DWTS finale

Ballroom dancer Katrina Burch sat down with Figure Skaters Online to evaluate Olympic Champion Evan Lysacek and partner Anna Trebunskaya’s Viennese Waltz and freestyle, which the couple performed on last night’s Dancing with the Stars. Team Evanna scored lowest among the three couples in the finals.

Evan and Anna’s Viennese Waltz, which was their redemption dance, was absolute gorgeous and should have really scored a perfect 30. I don’t understand why it didn’t. In Week 1, it scored a 23, and was only five points better in the finals.

As for his freestyle. It was good but it wasn’t a true Dancing With the Stars freestyle. It was more Jive than anything else. But it was good. He was underscored in this dance as well. I didn’t like the song and I wish Anna and Evan had chosen a different song but it was a good dance, abet frantic at times.

In the DWTS group I help run on livejournal, someone made a comment that they all tried too hard for the freestyle because they all want it so badly and I really feel this was true with Evan.

I also feel that his schedule with Stars on Ice made it more difficult for him to prepare this week. In addition to the Viennese Waltz and the freestyle, he also had to prepare two more dances for tonight’s episode. He will perform the Argentine Tango and the quickstep.

The judges account for 50-percent of the score with fan voting making up the other half. Will the fans come through for Evan, who scored the lowest among the final three on Monday?
