First an Olympian, Rachael Flatt now a debutante

Reigning U.S. Champion Rachael Flatt and 26 other young women from Southern Colorado were presented at the Colorado Springs Debutante Ball Dec. 22 at the Broadmoor International Center. The Debutante Ball, a 44-year tradition, benefits the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center’s ongoing acquisition fund and over the years has raised more than $525,000 for the museum’s permanent collection.

The Debutante Ball capped off an impressive year for Flatt, who started 2010 by securing a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team with a win at the U.S. Championships in Spokane, Wash. Flatt placed seventh at the Olympic Winter Games, ninth at the World Championship and won two silver medals on the Grand Prix circuit en route to qualifying for her first Grand Prix Final.

Away from the rink, Flatt graduated Summa Cum Laude from Cheyenne Mountain High School and was accepted to Stanford University, although she deferred admission until fall 2011. She also continued her public outreach with causes including Reading is Fundamental, Team for Tomorrow Humanitarian Relief Fund and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s I Compete Clean.
